Podcast | Ally Langdon (Parental Guidance) – In the latest episode of TV Central: One on One, host Aaron Ryan sits down with one of Australia’s most respected journalists — Ally Langdon — for a compelling and deeply insightful conversation that dives into parenting in the digital age.

Known for her fearless reporting on A Current Affair and her compassionate approach to storytelling, Ally returns to prime time with a brand-new season of Parental Guidance, airing as a special four-part event on Monday, June 30 at 7.30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.

In this must-listen podcast episode, Ally shares her thoughts on the biggest parenting issues facing Aussie families today, and what it was like stepping back into the “Parent Lounge” to host these powerful conversations. She also reflects on how the show has shaped her own parenting perspective.

Topics covered in the interview include:
  • Why Parental Guidance is returning as a four-episode special event
  • Eye-opening revelations from the Screen Time episode — including how parents often had more screen time than their kids
  • The emotional segment on children forming AI friendships
  • Confronting the issue of cyberbullying through online gaming
  • The critical role of expert voices, like eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant, in shaping the show’s discussions
  • What Ally learned from eight very different parenting styles
  • How the show impacts her own life as a working mum in a high-profile role
  • The parenting issues Ally still wants to tackle in future seasons

With her trademark warmth, insight and integrity, Ally gives listeners a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most talked-about parenting series on TV — and reveals how it’s resonating with families across the country.

Parental Guidance

The groundbreaking Parental Guidance returns with a special event series, delving deeper than ever before into the challenges of modern-day parenting, on Monday, June 30 at 7.30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.

Over four landmark episodes, eight brand new families, with distinctive parenting methods, bravely tackle the most explosive issues parents are facing today: Screen Time, Peer Pressure, Body Image and Mental Health.

These critical topics will be unpacked under the guidance of Ally Langdon, renowned journalist and host of A Current Affair, and Dr Justin Coulson, one of Australia’s most trusted parenting experts, leading the conversations Australia needs to have.

The eight diverse sets of parents include parenting styles Traditional, Pro-Tech, Active, Up Front, Authoritative, The Hard Way, Life School and Positivity. They will focus on and be guided through each topic, undertake real-world and eye-opening challenges designed to help explore the issues and how to parent effectively through them.

Viewers then get a front-row seat in the Parent Lounge where Ally, Dr Coulson and the parents come together to debate the results and the various parenting approaches, as well as share controversial opinions and vote for the parents they’ve learnt from the most. Ultimately, they overcome their divisions to share the struggles and joys of parenthood.

To add further insight and discussion into these monumental issues, experts and inspirational guests will join the Parent Lounge to share their insights and deeply personal stories.

Each episode is packed with emotional stories and innovative strategies that offer insight, practical advice and relatable moments for parents across Australia.

Ally Langdon:

“We are thrilled to bring Parental Guidance back to Australia for this special event series. The show resonates so deeply with audiences because it tackles the universal, yet very personal, journey of parenting. This four-part format allows us to focus on each specific topic in depth and the challenges faced by families today, giving viewers insight and reflection.”

Dr Justin Coulson:

“Parenting is constantly evolving. This series continues to provide a unique opportunity to observe different parenting styles and methods in action and understand the reasoning behind them. It’s less about judgement and more about learning and understanding the diverse perspectives into navigating parenting in the modern world.”

Parental Guidance is produced by Eureka Productions for the 9Network.

In 2023, Langdon took over hosting duties on A Current Affair, Australia’s No. 1 daily current affairs program.

Prior to that, Langdon was co-host of TODAY, alongside Karl Stefanovic. She joined TODAY on January 4, 2020 in what became the biggest news year in modern memory, starting with bushfires that rolled into COVID-19, economies in freefall, Black Lives Matter protests, the Beirut explosion, the US election and then ending the year with American politics in turmoil.

Langdon previously co-hosted Weekend TODAY with David Campbell in 2019, combining her presenting commitments with her 60 Minutes role as a reporter.

She joined 60 Minutes in 2011. Among her achievements include stories she has filed from Somalia in the midst of a brutal civil war, venturing into the raging heart of one of the most active and dangerous volcanoes on earth and coming face to face with Grizzly bears in the Canadian wilderness.

Langdon joined 60 Minutes after nine years in the Sydney newsroom, where she frequently travelled the globe to cover major stories.

She has also presented the 6pm Nine News Sydney bulletin and filled in on TODAY, co-anchoring the network’s coverage of the Queensland flood disaster and reporting for the telethon that raised more than $10 million for the victims.

In 2010, while in South Africa for the FIFA World Cup, Langdon was the only Australian journalist to make it into Cameroon to cover the plane crash that killed six Australian mining executives. At home, she played a key role in Nine’s award-winning coverage of the Australian federal election and hosted the prime-time documentary ‘A Royal Engagement’ when Prince William and Kate Middleton announced their plans to marry. Other major news events Langdon has covered include the drug wars in the Mexican town of Juarez, the bombing of the Australian embassy in Jakarta, and the return to Balibo in East Timor with the families of the five Australian newsmen killed during the Indonesian invasion in 1975.

She wrote the book ‘The Child Who Never Was –The Tegan Lane Story’ (released in 2007) after covering the inquest into the disappearance of the baby born to former water polo champion, Keli Lane. In December 2010, Lane was convicted of the baby’s murder.

Ally has also co-hosted Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight with David Campbell, in 2019 and 2021 (the Sydney-based pair could not attend the 2020 event).

She lives in Sydney with her husband Michael and their young boy Mack and daughter Scout. She is also an Ambassador for R U Ok?, the Mirabel Foundation and Gidget Foundation.
