Michael Thomson celebrates more than 45 years in Perth news – This year, 9News Perth anchor and acclaimed media personality Michael Thomson celebrates more than 45 years in Perth news across print, radio and television.
Born and raised in WA, Thomson’s career began in 1980 as a print journalist for the Daily News, reporting on the issues shaping the state.

He then joined Nine Perth in 1987 as a crime reporter and covered some of Western Australia’s biggest stories, including Kimberley serial killer Joseph Schwab, the arrest of Australia’s most wanted man John Friedrich, and the infamous 1988 Fremantle prison riot.
Thomson then moved into sport, becoming 9News Perth’s lead sports reporter and presenter. Representing Nine’s Wide World of Sports, he provided expert commentary and coverage for a host of global events, including three Commonwealth Games (1994, 1998, 2006) and three Olympic Games (Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, London 2012). His versatility also took him to several AFL Grand Finals, the Australian Grand Prix, and Sheffield Shield and one-day cricket matches.
During his time at Nine, Thomson’s contribution to journalism has been recognised with several accolades, including the Australian Sports Medal and the Dennis Cometti Award for Career Excellence at the 2019 WA Football Media Awards.
For nearly a decade he has anchored 9News Perth’s 6pm bulletin, guiding viewers through state and federal elections, the COVID pandemic, and breaking news events like the Cleo Smith case and major bushfires.

Beyond the nightly news desk, he has hosted several lifestyle programs for Nine Perth across the decades, including Just Add Water, contributed to and presented live radio on various stations including 6PR, and supported countless grassroots community events such as the HBF Run For A Reason. A devoted father and grandfather, Thomson remains remarkably humble despite his significant milestone, viewing it as a privilege to deliver the news to Perth families each week night.
“Reflecting on when I started in 1980, it’s amazing to think we had no mobile phones or computers. The technology has evolved beyond recognition, but the heart of the job hasn’t changed,”
– Thomson said.
“There is a profound joy in capturing a story and connecting with people from all walks of life. I’m still moved when a message arrives from someone I interviewed decades ago. It’s a reminder of why we do this.
“This career has been my window to the world. I have met people from all walks of life and been fortunate to witness some extraordinary and historic events. It’s a privilege to present the 6.00pm bulletin and work with the amazing team at Nine. Nine has been like a family to me.”

9News Perth News Director, Michael Genovese, acknowledged Michael Thomson’s distinguished career and his enduring impact on news in WA.
“Thommo has seen it all in this industry, yet he still brings an incredible level of passion and energy to the newsroom every single day,”
– he said.
“He is deeply invested in every story he tells. Having mentored generations of journalists, he has truly earned the unwavering trust of our audience.
“Together with our strong and dedicated team of experienced reporters and presenters at 9News Perth, we pride ourselves on consistently delivering WA’s best news every day of the year, with the stories that matter to our viewers.”
Michael Thomson returns to 9News Perth on Monday, January 19, at 6pm with Paddy Sweeney presenting sport and Natalia Cooper doing the weather.
Media stalwart Monika Kos will front 9News Perth’s Saturday and Sunday bulletins at 6pm, with Tracy Vo returning to the weekend desk in the coming months.

Personal note:
As a fellow Perth local, I wanted to add a personal note of congratulations to Michael. Thommo has been part of my life on screen since I was six years old. Night after night, it was always comforting to see him there — a familiar and trusted presence in our homes.
Over the years, teams changed and people came and went, but Thommo remained. His passion for news, his kindness, and his articulate delivery have made him not just a broadcaster, but a constant in the lives of so many West Australians. Perth news simply wouldn’t be the same without him.
