Joe Lycett’s United States Of Birmingham on SBS Viceland and SBS on Demand S1E1 – Having made the shock discovery that there are 18 other Birminghams (17 in the US and one in Canada), proud Brummie Joe Lycett embarks on an American road trip to see a country through its Birminghams.
With the blessing of the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Joe sets out to build a special relationship between Britain’s second city and its namesakes, cementing formal partnerships in the shape of ‘Friendship Agreements’.
Season One, Episode One:
Joe Lycett embarks on the ultimate Brummie road trip to discover the 18 other Birminghams of North America, starting in Birmingham, New Jersey, population 32. He meets the locals in a diner then shoots a gun for the first time.
He puts his newfound skill to the test in Birmingham, Pennsylvania where he joins a battle re-enactment and tracks down the descendants of the founder of this Birmingham. Sanctioned by the Lord Mayor, Joe forms official ‘Friendship Agreements’ with all the Birminghams to create the United States of Birmingham.
