Grand Designs: New Zealand on ABC – Brisbane-based, Kiwi-raised John Russell has always hankered for his own patch of Kiwi dirt.
Having spent his childhood holidaying in Wanaka, Central Otago has his heart and now the time is right for him and his Australian wife Sharon to put down some New Zealand roots and build a holiday home for their large, blended family.
However, this home comes with a twist – John and Sharon are keen to have a smaller footprint so have decided on a shared ownership model, believing it to be a good use of their money and a healthier use of resources. While they have sold some of the shares to the property, they still have some owners to find.
They’ve bought a site above Frankton with breath-taking views out to the Remarkables, however it comes with another twist – the site is practically vertical.
And on to this practically vertical site they’re planning on building a six bedroom, three story, full glassed home that will have a luxury mountain lodge feel to it.
John and Sharon have rented a place just down the road and their plan is to spend two weeks in New Zealand and two weeks in Brisbane. While they’re both excited about the project – Sharon’s nervous about finding other people to invest in the property. However, what she’s about to discover is – selling the other shares is going to become the least of her worries….
