Grand Designs Australia on ABC and ABC iview S12E9 – James and Rita plan to self-build an off-grid family home using recycled plastic bags and milk cartons, and home made bricks.
Rita and James and their two kids, are committed to treading lightly on the earth. They’re looking to settle down in a community north of Newcastle, NSW, called Shepherds Ground., a farmland subdivision on which 29 buyers have built off-grid homes, and work together to create a sustainable, village life.
Rita and James have just 230 thousand dollars to self-build a sustainable, off-grid family home for themselves and their family. They plan to use recycled plastic bags, milk cartons, home-made bricks, and an earthen floor.
But the longer the build goes, the more exhausted the family becomes. 8 months comes and goes. The budget blows out. And their dream of creating a model sustainable home seems like it might never come to fruition.
