Compass on ABC – Wilderness queen Gina Chick , winner of ALONE, takes us deep into the world of rewilding, a growing movement in Australia.
We follow a network of rewilders in Melbourne who discover ways to reconnect to nature and find their wild hearts and nourish their souls while living in the city.
They call it “sacred activism”.

in the 1970-80’s, i lived some of the ‘rewilding’ attitudes; having lived without electricity, carting water from the creek for drinking and cleaning.
As we became established, we grew our own vegetables, herbs and fruit. Our meat was surplus male chooks and goats.
By the 1990’s i was employed as a Natural Resource Management Officer in the Wheatbelt of WA; with some emphasis on becoming self-sufficient.
Now in my mid 80’s, i chair the Anglican Diocese of Bunbury-Sustainable Living Working Group, liaising with the 77 Anglican Churches in this Diocese.
I am reminded of the slogan from the Australian Council of Churches; “live simply – so that all may live”.
in the 1980’s i spent some time on communes in northern NSW and Frogs Hollow near Maleny, Queensland.
I really enjoyed the ‘rewilding Compass program which stirred me to rethink my own position.
i recognise that there can be varying degrees of rewilding and self sufficiency and you may not feel you have to be compelled to sell a metro home to adopt many of these attitudes.
