In this latest series of Back In Time, host Annabel Crabb is once again joined by the adventuresome Ferrone family to see how our society has changed through the lens of the classic corner shop.
Starting in the 1850s and travelling through to the 1990s, Back In Time For The Corner Shop charts the social, economic and historic changes that shape how we shop, live and connect as a community.
The Australian corner shop – otherwise known as the milk bar, general store and mixed business – was an institution for millions of Australians. More than a simple shop, it was the heart of many neighbourhoods. But over the decades the role of the corner shop has shifted, and its status as a community hub has changed.
Back In Time For The Corner Shop once again features the Ferrone family. Carol and Peter and their children – Julian, Sienna and Olivia – live and work in the shop and learn the highs and lows of being shopkeepers through various periods of Australian history. Annabel is on hand throughout their ‘time travel’ experience, to deepen their understanding of changes in our society, economy, technology, fashion, gender roles and food.
In the first episode, the Ferrone’s find themselves, grappling with the hard work of the 1850s. With Julian and Peter firmly out front getting familiar with the currency and serving customers, Sienna, Olivia and Carole endure the manual labour out of sight.
