MOVIE | You Should Have Been There Yesterday in cinemas for November – The trailer for the surf documentary YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN HERE YESTERDAY was launched today, ahead of the film’s release in Australian cinemas on November 21, 2024. Umbrella Entertainment is also delighted to announce that the film’s writer and director Jolyon Hoff will take part in an extensive Q&A tour ahead of the cinema release.

Following sold-out screenings at the Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne Film Festivals, YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN HERE YESTERDAY is an immersive cinematic experience. You will be swept up in this stunning homage to the birth of Aussie surf culture, compiled from over 150 hours of lovingly restored 16mm surf films from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

The documentary features interviews from surfing culture legends and commentators such as Albe Falzon, Tim Winton, Bob McTavish and Wayne Lynch. Written and directed by Jolyon Hoff (Searching For Michael Peterson), the film is a stunning homage to the birth of Aussie surf culture, and was made with support from the Australian Surf Film Archive, whose mission is to find, scan and restore as much footage as possible, to preserve it for future generations.

Synopsis:

A poetic homage to Australia’s early surf-culture with unearthed footage set to an original soundtrack. YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN HERE YESTERDAY combines hundreds of hours of lovingly restored 16mm footage with a downright killer score by salty legends Headland. This radical documentary tells the story of a wild community who took off up the coast and discovered a whole new way to live. Come on a trip down the Aussie coast of years gone by.

Featuring Albe Falzon, Wayne Lynch, Bob McTavish, Maurice Cole, Pauline Menczer, Ma Bendall, Tim Winton and many more.

The “From Noosa to Noarlunga” Q&A tour, with writer/director Jolyon Hoff will hit the road this spring. Jolyon will be accompanied at each screening by an accompanying cast of special guests and surfing legends (to be announced).

The tour kicks off on 19th of October in Noosa, and finishes up on 20th November in Noarlunga, South Australia, before the film heads into cinemas the following day.
