MOVIE REVIEW | Cold Storage – Blending horror, comedy, and a dash of classic creature-feature chaos, Cold Storage delivers a wildly entertaining ride that doesn’t take itself too seriously—but still manages to keep the stakes high.

The film’s premise is simple but effective: when a highly contagious, mutating fungus escapes a sealed facility, two young employees find themselves trapped in the middle of a nightmare. Over the course of one very long night shift, they must battle the rapidly spreading organism before it wipes out humanity.

What makes Cold Storage work so well is its confident mix of genres. On the surface, it leans heavily into the zombie-style horror territory, with the fungus transforming people into terrifying threats. Yet the film constantly balances the tension with humour, creating a tone that feels reminiscent of Men in Black—serious enough to keep the story grounded, but packed with comedic moments that keep the audience laughing.

Importantly, the comedy never turns the film into a full parody. Instead, it plays the concept straight while allowing the characters and situations to deliver the laughs. That balance helps Cold Storage maintain its momentum, shifting smoothly between suspense, action, and well-timed humour.

The cast also plays a major role in making the film work. Joe Keery brings a likable, relatable energy to the chaos, while the supporting performances help keep the story moving at a brisk pace.

But it’s Liam Neeson who stands out. Audiences have grown accustomed to seeing Neeson in intense action roles—particularly in the Taken series—but Cold Storage reminds viewers that he’s just as comfortable leaning into comedy. His performance strikes the perfect balance between deadpan humour and serious presence, echoing the comedic flair he’s shown in films like The Naked Gun. Seeing him return to that lighter side is one of the film’s biggest highlights.

While the movie often plays things for laughs, it’s not afraid to go surprisingly hard when it comes to the horror elements. There are several moments of graphic violence and gore that may catch viewers off guard—especially given the film’s comedic tone. Some scenes are genuinely shocking and may have audiences looking away from the screen.

Still, that unpredictability adds to the fun. Cold Storage embraces its B-movie roots while delivering polished performances and a lively script that keeps audiences engaged from start to finish.

Ultimately, it’s the kind of movie that’s perfect for a relaxed night at the cinema: entertaining, occasionally shocking, and packed with enough humour and creature-feature thrills to keep things memorable.

Cold Storage is a fun genre mash-up that knows exactly what it wants to be—and delivers a thoroughly enjoyable time at the movies.

Cinema Experience:

Event Cinemas Innaloo delivers a polished and enjoyable cinema experience, particularly in terms of presentation, sound, and overall atmosphere. The venue is clean, well maintained, and welcoming, making it a solid choice for both regular screenings and special events.

For the premiere screening attended, complimentary choc bombs were provided — a great added touch for the event, though not part of standard sessions. The screen size is impressive and well suited to major releases, while the sound quality is excellent, offering clear and immersive audio throughout.

The candy bar is well stocked with a strong variety of options, and the surrounding complex enhances the overall experience.

With Varsity located nearby, it’s easy to turn a movie outing into a full night out with quality food and drinks before or after the film.

One area that could be improved is the seating layout. Rows are positioned quite close together, so if you’re not seated on the end and need to step out during the film, it can be awkward and uncomfortable to manoeuvre past others.

Overall, Event Cinemas Innaloo offers a quality cinema experience with great sound, a good-sized screen, cleanliness, and excellent nearby dining options. While the tight row spacing is a minor drawback, it remains a popular and enjoyable destination for moviegoers.
