MOVIE | Lesbian Space Princess trailer – Today, Umbrella has released the trailer for award-winning Australian animated comedy Lesbian Space Princess, ahead of the film’s Australian theatrical release on September 11, giving local audiences a first glimpse at the inter-gay-lactic space adventure that has become a hit favourite with festivalgoers worldwide.
Created by first time filmmaker duo Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese, and produced by Tom Philips of We Made a Thing Studios, Lesbian Space Princess is a proudly independent debut feature, developed through the South Australian Film Corporation Film Lab: New Voices Program, with additional funding from Adelaide Film Festival and Screen Australia.
Bursting with heart, colour and camp, the film is a dazzling, candy-coloured journey of self-discovery, self-acceptance and queer joy.
Following a triumphant run on the international film festival circuit, Lesbian Space Princess has won the hearts of audiences and critics alike at the Berlin, Karlovy Vary, Frameline and SXSW London Film Festivals.
Most notably the film was honoured with the Teddy Award at the Berlin International Film Festival, one of the most prestigious accolades in queer cinema.
On home soil, the film also claimed the Audience Choice Awards at the Adelaide and Sydney Film Festivals. Lesbian Space Princess will also feature in the 2025 lineups for both Melbourne and New Zealand International Film Festivals.
Featuring an all-star voice cast of Shabana Azeez (The Pitt, Birdeater), Bernie Van Tiel (Class of ‘07), Gemma Chua-Tran (Heartbreak High, Ladies in Black), Richard Roxburgh (Prosper, Rake), Kween Kong (Ru Pauls Drag Race Australia), Madeleine Sami (Deadloch, The Breaker Upperers) and Aunty Donna (Aunty Donna’s Coffee Cafe), Lesbian Space Princess follows introverted Princess Saira, who is forced into a wild mission across the galaxy to rescue her ex-girlfriend from a group of deluded incels – the Straight White Maliens.
