MOVIE | Bury the Dead trailer – Umbrella has released the official poster for WE BURY THE DEAD, a gripping and emotional survival thriller starring Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens).  Written and directed by Zak Hilditch (1922, These Final Hours), the film will release in Australian and New Zealand cinemas from February 5th, 2026.

Receiving its International premiere at SXSW Austin, the hotly anticipated thriller is set in the aftermath of a devastating military experiment, drawing audiences deep into a haunting and emotionally charged survival story where the dead don’t stay buried. The film also stars Brenton Thwaites (Titans) and Mark Coles Smith (Mystery Road: Origin) alongside Ridley in what is Hilditch’s most ambitious feature film to date.

SYNOPSIS:

From acclaimed writer/director Zak Hilditch, WE BURY THE DEAD, follows Ava (Daisy Ridley) a desperate woman who volunteers for a body retrieval unit in a decimated Tasmania, hoping to find her missing husband. But as the unit begins its grim task, the corpses show signs of movement – and Ava’s search spirals into a terrifying battle for survival. Her journey into the heart of Tasmania forces her to confront the undead – and reckon with her own unresolved past.

Writer/director Zak Hilditch comments:

“This was a true labour of love from everyone involved and I’m thrilled to finally bring it to audiences in all its glory on the big screen in February.”

WE BURY THE DEAD is produced by Kelvin Munro and Grant Sputore for WA production company The Penguin Empire, alongside Ross Dinerstein (Campfire Studios), and Joshua Harris and Mark Fasano (Gramercy Park). Executive producers are Nathan Klingher and Ford Corbett (Gramercy Park), Nicholas Erickson, Sean Fannan and D.J. Jiang (Giant Leap Media) and Ari Harrison and Jeff Harrison (Umbrella).

Production credit: WE BURY THE DEAD is a The Penguin Empire production. Major production investment from Screen Australia in association with Screenwest, Lotterywest and the Western Australia Regional Screen Fund. Financed with support from Adelaide Film Festival Investment Fund. Local distribution by Umbrella Entertainment.

WE BURY THE DEAD WILL BE IN CINEMAS FEBRUARY 5
