MOVIE | Franz: Becoming Kafka opens 21 May – Sharmill Films is proud to announce that FRANZ: BECOMING KAFKA, the bold and imaginative new feature from internationally acclaimed director Agnieszka Holland will be in cinemas around Australia on 21 May 2026.
Poland’s Official Entry to the 98th Academy Awards®, the film is a sweeping, kaleidoscopic portrait of one of the 20th century’s most influential literary figures, Franz Kafka. Conceived as a mosaic of memory, myth and history, FRANZ: BECOMING KAFKA traces the imprint Kafka left on the world — from his birth in 19th-century Prague to his death in post-World War I Vienna.
Rather than a conventional biopic, Holland crafts a richly layered exploration of the man behind the literary giant, illuminating both the fragility and ferocity of a writer whose work continues to define modern alienation.
The film offers audiences a brand-new perspective on the life, imagination and enduring legacy of Franz Kafka, an artist whose work still speaks powerfully to contemporary audiences.
It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and has also screened at San Sebastian and Busan. The film will appeal to fans of Franz Kafka and his seminal works such as The Metamorphosis and The Trial. Director Agnieszka Holland is an award-winning Polish filmmaker and writer whose previous films include as Europa, Europa and In Darkness.
