Joel Pearlman to depart Roadshow Films – Joel Pearlman has decided to step down from his role as CEO of Roadshow Films after 30 years with the Village Roadshow organisation.

Pearlman’s tenure saw him oversee the organisation as it delivered outstanding box office results as the number one independent distributor in Australia and New Zealand across a diverse slate from local and global studios, licensors, and production companies including Warner Bros, Lionsgate, Village Roadshow Pictures, A24, FilmNation, Made Up Stories and Arenamedia.

Highlights include launching the HARRY POTTER, LORD OF THE RINGS, HUNGER GAMES and DARK KNIGHT franchises in ANZ.

As one of the most respected film executives in the industry, Pearlman was also instrumental in securing strong strategic partnerships for Village Roadshow, such as its investment in independent production, financing and distribution company FilmNation (Village Roadshow owns a 31.03% stake in the company), as well as creating one of Australia’s leading television drama producers Roadshow Rough Diamond in association with John and Dan Edwards.

Pearlman has been a long-time and passionate advocate for the Australian film industry and has distributed many of the most successful Australian releases over the past 20 years including RED DOG, THE DISH, BRAN NUE DAE, THE DRY and its sequel FORCE OF NATURE, PENGUIN BLOOM and MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, introducing great Australian cinema to local audiences and establishing a global footprint for homegrown productions.

Through Roadshow Films, Pearlman has supported some of the industry’s finest cultural and professional development organisations including the Natalie Miller Fellowship and Melbourne International Film Festival.

Pearlman said,

“My time at Village Roadshow has been such a remarkable chapter in my life and it is a bittersweet decision to move on to a new adventure. I am so grateful for the opportunity to have led this organisation for many years and am incredibly appreciative for the support from Village Roadshow CEO Clark Kirby, Village Roadshow Chair Robert Kirby and also former CEO Graham Burke. It has been a great privilege and honour to work for this iconic Australian organisation and with an amazing group of colleagues over many decades that have shared my love for cinema and entertainment.”

Clark Kirby said,

“Working with Joel has been one of the great privileges of my career. Joel leaves an indelible mark on our company he has helped build, shape and evolve over a remarkable 30-year career. More broadly, there are few people who have contributed more to the development of the Australian film industry than Joel and I wish him the very best for the future.”

Roadshow’s upcoming slate includes the Midnight Oil documentary THE HARDEST LINE, which will open the Sydney Film Festival next week. Other upcoming releases include the reboot of THE CROW starring Bill Skarsgard, Michael Gracey’s Robbie Williams biopic BETTER MAN, which opens across Australia on December 26, and Lionsgate’s John Wick spin off BALLERINA.
