UEFA EURO 2024™ on Optus Sport 6 July – Spain have broken German hearts this morning, scoring in the final minute of extra-time to send the hosts out of EURO 2024.
It was Spain midfielder Mikel Merino who rose highest in a crowded penalty area in the 119th minute to thump home a header past Germany’s keeper Manuel Neuer, who was rooted to the spot, to silence the home crowd and send the jubilant Spain fans in the stadium wild.
Pre-match, this was billed as the match of the tournament, and it did not disappoint.
Full of aggression and drama, control continued to swing between each side, but it was Dani Olmo who gave Spain the lead early in the second half, side-footing home from a Lamine Yamal pass.
But it wasn’t until the final minute of normal time that Germany was able to find a breakthrough when Florian Wirtz sent a thunderous strike in off the post to send the game into extra-time.
And though the game continued to ebb and flow with chances created by both sides as it headed towards needing penalties to separate the two sides, Merino’s last-gasp header ensured Spain secured their spot in the semifinals.
There, they will face France who overcame Portugal in dramatic fashion this morning.
With Kylian Mbappe leading the line for France and Cristiano Ronaldo doing the same for Portugal, there was an anticipation of goals and drama here, but a tense and nervy game required penalties to decide the winner.
After Joao Felix’s penalty hit the post, France took advantage and won through to the semi-final when Theo Fernandez made it a perfect five from five for France.
The semi-final between Spain and France will be played on Wednesday, July 10 at 5am (AEST) – live and exclusive on Optus Sport.
