The Swap on SBS – In a television first, this original series documents a bold new experiment as 12 students and families – from very different cultures, religions and backgrounds – are thrown into each other’s worlds.
The aim of the experiment is to confront and break down the barriers and stereotypes that divide us. Although we may like to think we live in a successful multicultural society, the reality is most of us live in silos – with very little connection or understanding of people and communities that are different to our own.
Over one school term, the experiment’s participants spend time in each other’s schools, homes and communities. Taking part are six Muslim families, four Catholic families, and two atheist families. For everyone involved, this will be the first time they’ve gotten close to someone who sees the world in a completely different way. It’s a huge leap into the unknown.
Series One, Episode Two:
After an eye-opening and sometimes bumpy three weeks hosting students and families from Brisbane’s more established northside at their school, it’s the ICB students and their families turn to venture over the river – and into completely foreign territory – for the first time. Immediately the ICB students are immersed into new and sometimes confronting worlds.
At Catholic colleges, Padua and Mt Alvernia, the ICB students find many of the rituals of Catholicism highly confronting. At Ferny Grove State High School, with its very different rules on gender and sexuality, they encounter an environment where students aren’t separated, relationships and dating are openly discussed, and where students have a range of sexual identities. As controversial issues come to the fore, everyone must confront their fears and insecurities.
