The Secret Life of Lighthouses on SBS – Presenter Rob Bell is on a voyage of discovery, taking him from the lighthouses of Britain and America through the storms of the North Sea to the tropics of Panama and the dust of the Mojave Desert.
This season he’s uncovering extraordinary feats of human ingenuity and exploring some of the wonders of the engineering world. His travels take him on adventures on both sides of the Atlantic, tackling the world’s busiest shipping lane, and setting sail in search of America’s first lighthouse. Rob meets local seafarers and lighthouse keepers to hear stories of shipwrecks discovering extraordinary feats of bravery, ingenuity, and design as he continues to crack the code of these enigmatic structures.
Season Three, Episode Two: Muckle Flugga
Rob sets sail to the furthest point of Britain to meet the Impossible Lighthouse at Muckle Flugga in the Shetland Islands.
This a lighthouse forged from war in one of the most inhospitable spots in the North Atlantic. Rob discovers the sheer power of the 250ft waves that batter the rock and threatened life and limb of the men building and manning the light and uncovers the crucial WWII role the Shetland Island lights had in protecting the nation.
