Grantchester on ABC and ABC iview S9E7 – It’s 1961 and times are changing in Grantchester.
Geordie arrives at the vicarage to ask for Alphy’s help with the case of a missing woman. When Alphy sees a picture of her, he is stunned to discover that it’s the woman he met in a bar recently, who introduced herself as Petra. It turns out that her real name is Caroline Stansham and her father says she’s been missing for weeks, meaning that Alphy could be one of the last people to have seen her.
When they visit her college room, Alphy is thrown to discover it bare, having been emptied weeks ago. Alphy admits that he was somewhat occupied the last time he was here, so didn’t take much notice of the minimal furnishings. They learn that Caroline had been writing for a student newspaper and track down the paper’s office. It turns out to be nothing more than a converted dorm room, occupied by two aspiring satirists, Innes and Nigel. They inform Alphy and Geordie that they haven’t seen Caroline in weeks.
Realising they’ve hit a dead end, Geordie calls it a night – without a body, there’s not much else they can do. But the next morning they are shocked to learn that Innes has been brutally murdered in his room. How could this have happened?
Does it have anything to do with Caroline’s disappearance?
Alphy and Geordie’s investigation leads them back to Sam and the halfway house, where they are thrown to find Caroline alive and well. It turns out that Caroline and Sam are now an item and that she’s dropped out of university to become a part of his group (now called The Way Finders).
Meanwhile, Geordie finds the pills that Cathy has been taking and confronts her about it. Cathy explains that the doctor prescribed them to control her moods. She suggests that this is what Geordie wanted, for Cathy to be calmer, but Geordie remains deeply troubled.
At a loss for what to do, Geordie seeks out Mrs C, asking if she’ll come back to the Keatings, to help out around the house. Mrs C agrees but when she later speaks with Cathy, she realises that Cathy has been wrongly prescribed these pills. That, in actual fact, the symptoms that Cathy has been displaying all point towards her going through ‘The Change’. On hearing this, Cathy is thrown but somewhat relieved to realise she is not going the way of her mother.
