GHOST SHIP
Australia’s most baffling maritime mystery – as strange as the case of the legendary Marie Celeste.
A routine voyage for four people from Perth to the Sunshine Coast on a supposedly ‘unsinkable’ steel-hulled yacht – the Patanela. Then in the early hours of 8th of November 1988 the Patanela vanished without trace 10 miles east of Botany Bay after its skipper sent three mysterious radio calls.
The vessel’s owner and the families of the missing crew members claimed foul play, or that the yacht had been hijacked by pirates while a Coroner believed the Patanela was hit by a rogue tanker and sank drowning all on board.
Under Investigation reopens the case of the Patanela, assisted by one of Australia’s most experienced seamen, Retired Navy Captain John Dikkenberg. And we’ll hear exclusively from a retired NSW Police officer who provides a credible sighting of the Patanela in far north Queensland, six months after it supposedly vanished!
