My Way on Nine – This week My Way packs markets, boxing, crafts and caffeine into one jam-packed community episode, Sunday at 5.30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.
Dean Khieu migrated with his family as a refugee from Cambodia, growing up to run Global Food Markets in Logan, taking over from his father who started it all in 2005 alongside three other Cambodian stallholders to bring the tastes of their homeland cooking to Aussies. Today the Sunday morning markets have grown to more than 100 stallholders, offering a wonderful selection of fresh produce, authentic street food and a buzzing atmosphere.
Next we head to Awesome Wilson Boxing in Tinbeerwah to meet Katrina “Katatak” Wilson, who got into boxing after training with her husband, Bobby “Precious” Wilson, an Australian amateur champion. Bobby himself had an unsettling upbringing, so they shared their love for the sport with the community, mentoring troubled young people in the ring. Since his death, Katrina has carried on Bobby’s mission to help vulnerable kids box on and find a stable future in life.
Sue and Jeff Tickner are soul mates and masters of their woodwork craft. A chat about their family motto in 2014 led to the prototype for carving family portraits out of wood, which has now grown into the Figured Out Families business in Verrierdale on the Sunshine Coast. Their creatively modern take produces wooden figurine portraits with parts that can be interchanged as families grow and evolve.
Finally, Alex Ridgway takes viewers into the engine room of Neighbourhood Coffee Roasters in the Brisbane suburb of Albion. Growing up above his parents’ restaurant on Caxton Street, his heart was set on a career in hospitality, and now Alex owns one of the city’s top cafes and coffee roasteries, focused on the quality of his product, not the quantity.
