The never-ending magic of Moomba will come to life in two special programs that celebrate the ongoing love affair the people of Melbourne have for this legendary event.
Marvellous Moomba, hosted by Peter Hitchener and Alicia Loxley, will go to air this Thursday at 7.30pm, while the Moomba Parade, hosted by Peter Hitchener and Livinia Nixon, will be televised on Monday, March 13, at 2.00pm, both on Channel 9 and 9Now
As we prepare to celebrate Moomba’s 69th year, Marvellous Moomba will showcase the event as a festival for the people, by the people, with heartfelt stories from people behind the scenes.
2023 Moomba Monarchs Rob Mills and Rhonda Burchmore will talk emotively about how it feels to wear the crown and reminisce on treasured memories of years gone by.
City of Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp will celebrate the weird and wonderful side of Moomba and provide an insight into what makes it such a unique event. We’ll also hear from the Lord Mayor on how Moomba rises every year as a grand festival that brings Melburnians together to share in the vibrancy, rich culture and diversity of our city.
Viewers will discover what makes the Birdman Rally so loved and what inspires courageous competitors to don inventive homemade flying devices and hurl themselves over the Yarra River in the name of charity.
We’ll also meet Moomba Parade costume designer Emily Barrie to look at the detailed work that goes into creating the elaborate costumes of the dance troupes, community groups and performers who add so much colour to the day.
Our celebration of Moomba will culminate in a special broadcast of the marvellous Moomba Parade next Monday at 2.00pm.
