DNA technology that helped identify an evil assailant this week on 60 Minutes

THE BONDI BEAST

It was one of Australia’s most baffling – and terrifying – unsolved crime sprees. A series of horrific sexual assaults on women and girls in and around Sydney’s affluent eastern suburbs. The rampage started in the mid-1980s and lasted 16 years. In that time, the Bondi Beast as he was called attacked on at least 31 occasions. Police had few clues, but to their credit never gave up investigating. Then a few weeks ago, 37 years after he first struck, detectives were able to unmask the monster. He was revealed to be Keith Simms. On assignment for 60 MINUTES, Sylvia Jeffreys reports how extraordinary DNA technology, along with dogged investigative work, combined to identify the evil assailant.

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE

From harmless tipple to devastating turmoil, Lisa Greenberg knows how easy it is to fall into the grip of alcohol addiction. The wife of Todd Greenberg, one of Australia’s best known sports bosses, almost died when drinking took over her life. Now, as she tells Allison Langdon, she wants to be a cautionary tale about its dangers. But Lisa certainly hasn’t joined the fun police, and she’s not campaigning for everyone to stop drinking. Instead, the message in her bottle is to remind us to be careful, and to show the world just how great life can be on the other, sober side.
