England, 1954. Young, ambitious Luke Fitzwilliam arrives from Nigeria, with the promise of a job at Whitehall. On the train to London, he meets the elderly Miss Pinkerton, who confides in him that there is a killer on the loose in her quiet village of Wychwood.
The locals believe that the recent string of deaths are accidents, but she suspects otherwise. When Miss Pinkerton is struck down on her way to Scotland Yard, Fitzwilliam finds himself compelled to continue what she started. With her dying words ringing in his ears, he sets off for Wychwood, determined to uncover the truth.
As Fitzwilliam infiltrates Wychwood’s high society, he is shocked to bear witness to not one, but three further deaths. Making an unlikely alliance with local Lady of the manner, he struggles to pin motive and suspect. As tensions mount between Wychwood residents and the people of the poor neighbouring hamlet of Ashe Bottom, he realises that power is needed to take down power.
“Christie’s wicked eye for class and hypocrisy has given us this funny, but devastatingly furious little book about injustice. I have a feeling she was experimenting, trying something different, and if we’ve done the same, I can only put my hands up and say we had licence to do so, from the Queen of Crime herself,”
– Siân Ejiwunmi-Le Berre (Screenwriter).
