Old People’s Home for Teenagers on ABC – Week Four of the intergenerational program is dedicated to mobility, a week of giving our volunteers ideas on how to integrate movement and exercise into their daily lives.
This week, the participants will learn how exercise is vital to maintain healthy living; to help improve bone density, increase cardiovascular fitness, and especially for older adults, to prevent falls.
On Day 1, the group arrives to an outdoor excursion, where exercise scientist Van Marinos gets everyone up and moving with resistance bands.
On Day 2, the group participates in a dance class with a difference. As they try out waltzing, disco and even TikTok dancing, some participants love to get into the groove, especially Dave. However Ayden is mortified and wants to disappear from the room completely.
Day 3 delivers the ancient art of going with the flow, Tai Chi. While a couple of teens like Charlie and Jayden find themselves laughing at the gentle, quiet movements, Addison is embracing it and getting into the zone.
Next up, the volunteers meet a new breed of mini-motivators – pups from Guide Dogs Australia. These pooches take the teens and seniors through a sensory obstacle course that requires teamwork, communication, and patience.
On the final day, the teens and seniors are faced with Foamageddon – a foamy and wet obstacle course that is going to require strength, hand-eye coordination and excellent communication.
