The nominations for the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards are set to be announced later tonight and several Aussies in for shot at this year’s announcement.

Toni Collette is a shoe-in for her performance in the dramedy ‘United States of Tara’, which scored her a win for Best Actress in a Comedy Series at last year’s awards ceremony. Collette will likely face similar competition as last year, including ’30 Rock’ star Tina Fey and ‘Weeds’ leading lady Mary-Louise Parker.

Simon Baker, who plays the meticulous Patrick Jane in ‘The Mentalist’, is a hot contender for an Emmy nom in the Best Actor in a Drama Series category, with competition expected to come from some familiar faces – including Bryan Cranston (‘Breaking Bad’), Michael C. Hall (‘Dexter’) and Jon Hamm (‘Mad Men’).

Rose Byrne and Rachel Griffiths are also expected to be up for nominations in the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category for their roles in ‘Damages’ and ‘Brothers and Sisters’.

While the number of Aussies in for a chance for an Emmy nom is fewer than previous years, the number of Emmy upsets is expected to be greater than ever.

TV veteran Edie Falco (‘Nurse Jackie’) and newcomer Lea Michele (‘Glee’) are tipped to compete for the Best Actress in a Comedy Series category, giving our Toni Collette a run for her money.

Meanwhile, Glenn Close (‘Damages’) could be Emmy-less this year, with Juliana Margulies a hot favourite to take out Best Actress in a Drama Series for her role in ‘The Good Wife’.

‘Glee’ and ‘Modern Family’ are expected to turn the best Comedy Series category on its head, pushing 4-time straight Emmy-winner ’30 Rock’ out of its throne.

‘Mad Men’ could also be de-throned with the return of ’Lost’ to the podium for Best Drama Series, in the wake of the show’s sixth and final season.

The nominations for the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards will be announced by television stars Sofia Vergara (‘Modern Family’) and Joel McHale (‘Community’) at 10.30pm AEST.

The nominations will be streamed live at Emmys.com

Winners for the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards will be revealed on August 29 on NBC.

Neil Patrick Harris ('How I Met Your Mother') has officially signed a deal to guest-star on the underdog musical comedy 'Glee'.

Neil Patrick Harris has been confirmed for a guest-starring role on 20th Century Fox TV’s musical comedy ‘Glee’.

Harris is no newcomer to the musical genre. The 36-year old appeared on Broadway in 2001 as Tobais Ragg in ‘Sweeny Todd’, as Emcee in ‘Cabaret’ in 2003 and starred in Joss Whedon’s Emmy Award-winning musical web series, ‘Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog’ on 2008.

Details of Harris’ role have yet to be released, but the Emmy nominated actor has only confirmed for the one episode.

Early reports linked Harris to director Joss Whedon’s upcoming episode of ‘Glee’, but that has yet to be confirmed.

‘Glee’ returns in April on FOX and Network Ten.

Meryl Streep, Paul McCartney and Robert Pattinson are on Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin's guest-star wish list for the upcoming season of '30 Rock'.

Robert Pattinson

Following last year’s Emmy win, creator and star Tina Fey expressed her interested in getting Oprah Winfrey to appear on ’30 Rock’, which seemingly worked out for the comedy series.

So this year, Fey and co-star Alec Baldwin hoped to drum up even more celebs, following another consecutive win for Best Comedy Series at this years Emmys.

“I think our new dream guest star is Meryl Streep,” said Fey backstage at the Emmys. “I think she would be a great love interest for Alec, but I guess they already did a movie like that, so I don’t know if she’ll do it. I would like her to be Alec’s love interest, or Grizz’s love interest to change it up.”

After winning his Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Baldwin expressed interest in getting The Beatles’ Paul MCartney.

“We want McCartney; I want McCartney to come on. We’re working on it.” he said.

Another star Baldwin hopes to”get” is ‘Twilight’s’ Robert Pattinson.

“I’m sure that [Pattinson] has no shortage of shows that want him to come on, like Desperate Housewives, shows like that. I mean, those women would sure like to get their hands on [him].”

It’ll be interesting to see if any of these work out.

Who else would you like to see drop by ’30 Rock’ this season?

Neil Patrick Harris from 'How I Met You Mother' looks to be the front runner to host this year's Primetime Emmy Awards on September 20th.

According to Variety, it’s going to be one “legendary” Emmycast.

Neil Patrick Harris, currently know for his role as Barney Stinson on ‘How I Met Your Mother’, looks to be the front runner to host the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.

While no deal has been closed yet, sources say the actor is currently in the middle of cutting a deal with CBS and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Harris recently received rave reviews as host of this year’s Tony Awards, which were held on June 7th on CBS. So it’s no wonder the network approached the comedy actor to front this year’s night of nights for TV.

Emmycast executive producer, Don Mischer, is under immense pressure from the network and Academy, after last year’s Awards were widely panned for the decision to use five reality TV show personalities as co-hosts.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences continue their splitting of categories and potential nominees.

Following on from a number changes to this year’s Emmy Awards categories, The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences have decided to split the “variety, music or comedy series and specials” category each into two separate awards. One for “series” and another for “special events”.

Meaning popular comedy programs like ‘The Daily Show’ will no longer have to face off with big events like the Academy Awards.

Also, each category will feature a separate award for directing and another for writing. Until now, directors and writers from the same “variety, music or comedy series” or “special” were in competition each other. With these new changes, they will now compete for separate awards.

“The Television Academy’s board of governors, writers and directors peer groups have long wanted to see separate competitions for the VMC series and specials,” TV Academy chairman and CEO John Shaffner said. “Now, writers and directors working on both VMC series and specials will take part in competitions that recognize the creative challenges posed by each format, as well as the talent required and accomplishments possible in both the series and specials categories.”

This year’s Creative Emmys are scheduled for September 12, and are set to air on September 19 on E!, while the Primetime Emmys will be held and broadcast on September 20 on CBS.

Showtime will begin streaming it's award hopefuls to Academy voters this year on both the iPhone and the iPod Touch.

According to Variety, Showtime will begin streaming it’s TV award hopefuls to Academy voters this year on both the iPhone and the iPod Touch.

The cable channel has partnered with third-party mobile application developer Transpera to enable the service, where Emmy voters with Apple devices will be able to screen full episodes of potential nominees including ’Dexter’, ‘Weeds’ and ‘United States of Tara’ by entering a passcode in the iPhone/iPod Touch application.

Showtime’s executive VP of corporate communications, Richard Licata, said the pay TV channel had already saved tens of thousands of dollars” last year when it pulled back on traditional DVD screeners and provided its Emmy hopefuls online via sho.com/foryourconsideration.

Making the episodes available to the iPhone and iPod Touch is “just another option for those TV Academy members who want to see product any time and any place,” said Licata.

When asked whether Showtime officials were concerned about Emmy voters viewing their show on screens even smaller than computer monitors, Licata responded: “I don’t think the creative is compromised in this way. It’s just another avenue for people to explore. They can watch two or three minutes of an episode on an iPhone, and they can at least decide if they like the show.”

Traditional DVD screeners will still be available for those wishing to view screeners the old-fashioned way.

From series creator Matthew Weiner (The Sopranos), comes the most talked about drama of the year.

Filled with egomaniacal suits, powdered housewives, retro furnishings and enough smoke and booze to make your eyes water, this drama will entice all your senses. It’s complete and utter genius and my favourite new show.

Previously limited to Foxtel Movie Extra subscribers, the critically acclaimed drama, has just arrived on iTunes. Go check out this truly mesmerising piece of television.

4.5 out of 5 stars

Set in the 1960′s New York, this sexy, stylised and provocative drama fellows the lives of the ruthlessly competitive men and women of Madison Avenue advertising, and ego-driven world where key players make an art of the sell. The Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series for Best TV drama blurs the lines between truth and lies, perception and reality. The drama unfolds around Donald Draper, the biggest ad man in the business. As he calls the shots n the boardroom – the bedroom – he struggles to stay a step ahead of the rapidly changing times and the young executives nipping at his heels.

Download the entire first season on iTunes today. You’d be mad not to experience the show the critics are raving about!

Basic cable network AMC has officially optioned a third season of Emmy award winning drama Mad Men, but behind the scenes things aren’t so hunky dory.

Production base, Lionsgate currently don’t have a deal in place with creator/executive producer Matthew Weiner for the third season. So while the show wraps up it’s second season over the next two weeks, negotiations will continue between the studio and the head honcho.

Sources claim, however, that Weiner is also fishing for a significant pay rise and over all deal with the studio, and with Mad Men’s increasing popularity and critical acclaim it seems rightly deserved. It’s also believe that Weiner made rounds with several other major studios leading up to/and after the drama’s Emmy win.

So the question is, will Lionsgate step up to the plate or will Weiner be forced to look elsewhere for a home?

For the sake of the show, let’s hope Lionsgate nail down that contract and sign Weiner up for several more years to come.

Mad Men concludes it second season next week on AMC.
