The first night of finals week saw the six remaining amateur cooks go head-to-head in a “monster” pressure test — to recreate a cake by Adriano Zumbo, the man behind the last season’s croquembouche challenge.

The contestants were given 4 hours to recreate Zumbo’s V8 cake, which contained eight different layers and a tempered white chocolate flower.

It was the mother of all pressure tests, with the recipe spanning four pages. The frustration showed on each contestant’s face as they struggled to beat the clock.

For Alvin, Courtney and Callum, the pressure was too much for them, as they were announced as bottom three contestants.

Ultimately, it came down to following the recipe and presentation and for Alvin it meant his time in the ‘MasterChef’ kitchen was over.

“It’s been a wonderful ride,” said Alvin. “I couldn’t have expected anymore.”

Alvin hopes to cement his place in the culinary world by opening an Asian inspired tapas bar.

Winning the challenge was Jimmy, who surprised the judges with his finished V8 cake. His prize for winning was the chance to pick the ingredients for tomorrow’s mystery box challenge.
