NBC renews ‘Parenthood’

NBC’s ‘Parenthood’ has beaten the odds and has received a second season pick up by the struggling network.
The family drama, based on the 80′s film by Ron Howard, has been a solid performer for NBC, averaging 6.5 million viewers and a 3.2 rating among adults 18—49 since its debut last month.
“We are so happy to welcome back this multilayered and compelling series about an extended American family for another season,” said NBC president Angela Bromstad in a statement. “It’s gratifying that Parenthood continues to garner critical acclaim and is generating highly positive reaction from viewers, thanks to the fearless creativity of its producers and the extraordinary performances delivered by its ensemble cast.”
This series is the second attempt by NBC to adapt ‘Parenthood’ for the small screen. Despite featuring a prominent cast (although unbeknownst at the time), including Leonardo DiCaprio, David Arquette and Thora Birch, the first adaptation was universally panned by critics and was quickly cancelled soon after its premiere in 1990.
The current series, from ‘Friday Night Lights’ exec Jason Katims, stars Peter Krause, Lauren Graham, Erika Christensen, Dax Shepard, Monica Potter, Sam Jaeger, Bonnie Bedelia and Craig T. Nelson.
“To get two out of this year is very positive for us and we feel the shows are true to the brand,” said Bromstad. “Creatively we feel very good about showrunner Jason Katims and the cast. It would be tragic if this type of show didn’t work on network television.”
Besides ‘Community’, ‘Parenthood’ is only the second scripted freshman series to receive a renewal by NBC this season.
